Gardener’s Notes: Melons need warm weather to grow. Plant seed in late spring after temperatures reach 21C (70F). Seed may be started indoors 3-4 weeks before planting outdoors. Transplant when seedlings have 3-4 leaves. When planting outdoors, sow 4-6 seeds in a 12-inch circle. Thin seedlings to strongest 2-3 plants. Keep soil moist when fruits develop. Harvest when rind is dull and underside of melon turns yellow.Â
