Gardener’s Notes: Squash is a warm-season crop. Start seeds indoors 3 weeks before last frost and transplant carefully, or plant directly outdoors in spring when night temperatures reach 55F (13C). Grow in fertile, well-drained soil. Sow 4-6 seeds in a 12-inch circle. Thin to 2-3 plants before vines spread. Harvest fruits when rinds are hard and tough. Cut with 2 inches of stem. Store in a cool, dry location.
