Gardener’s Notes: Melons need warm weather to grow. Plant in late spring after nighttime temperatures reach 55F (13C). Seed may be started indoors 3-4 weeks before planting outdoors; transplant when seedlings have 3-4 leaves. When planting outdoors, sow 5-6 seeds in a 12-inch hill. Thin seedlings to strongest 3 plants. Water regularly. Harvest melons when stem breaks easily from the vine.
